We Will Find Happiness in Loving God and Others
Read Matthew 22:37-39

In two commands Jesus summarized the entire Old Testament law. His summarization shows us what is important for us as his followers to do: to love God wholeheartily and to love our neighbors as ourselves. When we do these two things, we will not only please God by our obedience, but we will also experience real happiness.
Ironically, real happiness is not found in fulfilling our own appetites and desires. Rather it is found in loving God and others. This is not by chance, either, God designed it that way. He knew the value of loving others even before he proved his love for us on the cross. He also knew how self-absorbed we are as humans and that we would fill our lives with empty pursuits in search of happiness if he didn't command us to love him and others.
As Paul tells us, all of our works will be tested by fire on Judgement Day (Read 1 Corinthians 3:13). Those works that were done out of selfishness will not last. But those works done out of love for God and others will. Because this love-and the works motivated by it-are everlasting, we will find real meaning in doing them. In addition, we will experience real joy in giving of ourselves to God and others out of love. It is in giving that we find purpose in life. From purpose we gain true happiness.
